FAQs
MYOM general questions
What is MYOM Original Oat?
MYOM Original Oat is a blend of oats with added calcium, vitamins and minerals to make an oat drink by adding water at home.
- MYOM is Free-from dairy and lactose free.
- Nutrient-packed: Fortified with calcium, vegan-friendly vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and iodine. MYOM has more calcium than dairy milk, with each 100ml containing 16% of an adult’s daily requirement and 15% of an adult’s daily requirement of Vitamin D3, and 36% of Vitamin B12.
- Iodine-fortified: we haven’t forgotten about iodine, a crucial mineral often overlooked in plant-based milks. 100ml of MYOM has 20% of an adult’s recommended daily requirement of Iodine.
- No added sugars: Rest-assured, we never add sugar to MYOM. We keep things sweet, but naturally so. You will see some sugar on our nutritional information, this is only ever naturally occurring sugar from the oats. In fact, you’ll see our level (1.9g per 100ml of made-up MYOM) is lower than other leading oat milk brands and semi-skimmed cow’s milk.
Is MYOM suitable for vegans?
Absolutely! MYOM, inclusive of its ingredients and packaging, is completely suitable for vegans according to the definition of the European Vegetarian Union. MYOM is dairy free and naturally lactose free as you would expect from a plant-based brand.
MYOM v dairy milk.
There are several differences between MYOM oat drink and dairy milk, such as their sources, ingredients, nutrition, and environmental impact. Here are some of the main ones:
- MYOM is lactose-free, making it a good option for lactose intolerance people. Dairy milk contains lactose, which can cause digestive problems for some people.
- MYOM provides many of the same nutrients as dairy milk, and in the case of calcium slightly higher than that found in the same quantity of semi-skimmed cow’s milk.
- MYOM is lower in calories and fat than semi-skimmed dairy milk.
- MYOM has 34kcal/100ml. Semi-skimmed dairy milk has 46kcal/100ml.
- Carbohydrates: MYOM has 4.7g/100ml. Semi-skimmed dairy milk has 5g/100ml.
- Fat: MYOM has 1.4g/100ml. Semi-skimmed dairy milk has 2g/100ml.
- Of which saturates: MYOM has 0.2g/100ml. Semi-skimmed dairy milk has 1g/100ml.
- Oat milk is often considered a more sustainable choice than dairy milk, as it requires less water, land, and greenhouse gas emissions to produce.
- Dairy milk has a higher environmental impact due to methane emissions from cows and the deforestation caused by animal agriculture.
MYOM v oat drinks in cartons?
A first of its kind, MYOM ORIGINAL OAT is a creamy blend of oats that tastes delicious, is good for us and an effortless way to tread more lightly day by day. MYOM ORIGINAL OAT tastes heavenly but feels even better. A more conscious choice for those who love oat drinks and want to live more sustainably.
MYOM ORIGINAL OAT is at home in any cupboard, no refrigeration until it is needed. With a longer shelf-life you never need run out of oat drink again. MYOM ORIGINAL OAT couldn’t be easier to make. Simply squeeze, add cold water, shake and you’ve got a bottle of sensational, full bodied oat drink with a fabulous taste and smooth texture. Once made, MYOM ORIGINAL OAT is just about the coolest thing in the fridge.
MYOM v oat powder?
MYOM is an oozy premix, definitely not a powder, so there’s none of the chalkiness you sometimes get with powders. Powder oat milk does not have the same creamy texture as MYOM Original Oat, and they can sometimes leave a little residue or grittiness in your cup if not mixed properly.
Some powder oat milk brands contain additives or preservatives like modified starches that are assigned an E number to indicate the chemical modification.
MYOM Original Oat is a ‘clean milk’ premix, with a long shelf life achieved without additives or preservatives.
Is there a barista version?
Not yet but there will be soon. MYOM ORIGINAL OAT is the first of many new varieties.

Swapping in MYOM ORIGINAL OAT into your cooking instead of whole milk or your current oat milk is easy. Whisk into a white sauce (roux) for baked pasta, stews and sauces. Splash into a vegetable curry when it’s too spicy or just add to a chunky vegetable soup to make it a bit creamier.
And don’t worry if you’re not feeling creative just enjoy daily in cups of tea, your favourite coffee or even a milkshake!

What happens if I add the wrong amount of water?
You can add more MYOM if you’ve added too much water, or more water if you haven’t added enough. If you want a creamier taste, just add less water.
As a rule - one MYOM pouch plus 440ml of water makes 500ml of a perfect semi skimmed style oat milk.
Does shaking it for a few seconds really mix it properly?
Yes – the recipe has been created to ensure it mixes well. If left for any length of time, you will get some separation, but simply shake for a few seconds and it will be properly mixed again.
Can I make myom in a blender?

My MYOM is separating, is that normal?
Yes – all plant milk separates a little, but you often don’t see this when you buy milk in a carton. Just gently shake the bottle of made MYOM ORIGINAL OAT before every use and it will be the same tasty creamy recipe that you made on day one!
How do I store MYOM?
Storing MYOM is very easy. Before you make it up, you can keep it in any cupboard away from direct sunlight at room temperature. Once opened, make it up, store it in the fridge and consume within 5 days.
Does MYOM need to be refrigerated?
Yes, like any other fresh milk or plant milk the made MYOM ORIGINAL OAT needs chilling in the fridge and used within 5 days. The unopened pouch can be stored in a cupboard away from direct sunlight at room temperature.
What is the shelf life of MYOM original oat?
Typically you can store your MYOM ORIGINAL OAT pouch for up to 4 months before making it into a milk and storing it in the fridge for up to 5 days . You will find the corresponding best-before date on the packaging. The pouches should be stored in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight to promote their shelf life.
Why can MYOM be stored for so long?
We carefully process our blend to ensure its suitable to be stored in your cupboard before using. Our MYOM ORIGINAL OAT only becomes ‘fresh’ when you make it.
Can I use MYOM after its expiry date?
We want you to enjoy MYOM ORIGINAL OAT at its best. We recommend making and enjoying it before its expiry date as it may not deliver on its delicious taste and texture after this date.
Can I just add MYOM directly into my tea of coffee from the pouch without making up the milk?
For best results we recommend following the on pack make up instructions. If you do choose to open the pouch and not make it into a milk immediately, once opened, ensure you store the open pouch in the fridge and use within 5 days.
How many portions of MYOM in a pouch?
Our 65g pouch makes 500ml of milk.
Why can I only make 500ml of MYOM original oat milk?
Did you know that one in six pints of dairy milk is wasted (90% by households) and consumers pour away 500m pints each year?
We listened to our consumers and to make life easy for you and ensure there is less waste for the planet our first MYOM ORIGINAL OAT pouch makes 500ml. Don’t worry though, our postal pack has 6 pouches so you can make up to 3 litres at a time if you needed more.
Will you be making other pack sizes in the future?
Yes, we are looking at a range of pack sizes to suit consumers needs. For news and updates, sign up here.
How is MYOM packaged?
Our packaging is an essential part of the MYOM experience. Not only does our packaging protect and preserve MYOM Original Oat during transit, sale and beyond, we use our packaging to communicate essential information about MYOM, such as ingredients, nutrition, storage and use.
We work with our partners to determine the best formats and materials, reducing packaging volume and excess, defining the most suitable materials for recycling, and limiting waste from making it at MYOM to making it at home.
MYOM POUCH
- The EU and FDA approved MYOM pouch is a pre-made, recyclable, spouted pouch designed without aluminium to preserve and protect MYOM from moisture, oxygen, aromas, and light. Our convenient high barrier recyclable pouches have a long shelf life and help reduce food waste.
- To recycle - simply rinse out the MYOM pouch, reattach the cap and recycle from home in your usual curb side recyclable plastics bin.
MYOM BOXES
- We use vegetable-based inks as standard and low-migration inks that are food safe.
- Our box manufacturer is FSC & PEFC certified – all MYOM paper and card products are made with sustainable, renewable materials from well-managed forests. Our partners maintain Chain of Custody of materials from origin to end product, which means the materials we use can be traced back to sustainably managed forests.
- The glue we use is vegan friendly, water-based, non-toxic, biodegradable and does not affect the recycling process.
Where is myom made?
MYOM is made in North Lanarkshire in Scotland’s Central Lowlands between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Sustainability
Is MYOM really more sustainable?
Yes – more sustainable than dairy by a long way and considerably more sustainable than ready to drink plant milks. The negative impact of methane gas on climate change is well documented and cows emit a lot of methane. Whilst plant milks don’t have the same methane issues, the amount of CO2 produced because of transportation and refrigeration is similar for both dairy and ready to drink plant milks. MYOM reduces the CO2 emissions by up to 90% in comparison – just by you adding the water at home rather than this being done in a factory. MYOM packaging is so much smaller to make each litre, is lighter to transport and the long shelf-life ensures waste is minimised. In terms of what you can do every day to minimise your impact on climate change, switching to MYOM is probably the most effective thing you can do.
Can MYOM packaging be recycled?
Yes, our pouches and caps are recyclable from home. MYOM pouches are made of the same material as yoghurt pots and food tubs and are widely recycled curb side. Simply rinse out the pouch, reattach the cap and recycle from home in your usual curb side recycling bin.
Our boxes are made from PEFC Certified folding box board from 100% primary fibre from sustainable forests, fully recyclable and accredited (FSC® & PEFC™). Our box board is organic, renewable, recyclable and sustainable, with the lowest carbon footprint of any packaging material. Box board is a feedstock for the production of recycled carton board and other paper-based products and is the most recycled material in the EU – it has a 81% recycling rate and can be recycled more than 25 times with little to no loss of integrity.
Nutrition
What are the benefits of a balanced plant-based diet?
There is a movement towards more plant-based diets, whether that be vegan or ‘flexitarian’. Obviously, diet choice is completely personal. There are some benefits to more plant-based eating, for health, the environment, and animal welfare. For example, studies have found a protective effect of a vegetarian diet versus the incidence of heart disease and cancer; a plant-based diet was found to have a protective role against chronic disease mortality and including more plant variety in the diet (30+ is the magic number) can have a positive effect on the diversity and health of your gut microbiome.
Can children drink MYOM oat drink?
For those children who do not have diagnosed gluten allergies and are not on hypoallergenic formula, unsweetened calcium-fortified oat milk alternatives, such as MYOM Original Oat can be used from one year of age as part of a healthy, balanced diet which contains plenty of calcium, protein, and energy. If you’re opting for an alternative milk, it’s important to go for fortified option like MYOM, which have levels of nutrients such as calcium, vitamin B12 and iodine similar or better than those found in cow’s milk.
MYOM and calcium
MYOM is a source of calcium, we fortify it with calcium carbonate. It contains 130mg of calcium in 100ml of made-up MYOM, which is slightly higher than that found in the same quantity of semi-skimmed cow’s milk (120mg) and is 16% of your recommended intake. Research has found that absorption by the body of the calcium in calcium carbonate fortified plant milk is very similar to cow’s milk. MYOM is also a source of vitamin D, which helps to support normal calcium absorption and bone health.
MYOM and sugar
MYOM is completely free of any added sugar. You will see some sugar on our nutritional information, this is only ever naturally occurring sugar from the oats. In fact, you’ll see our level (1.9g per 100ml of made-up MYOM) is lower than other leading oat milk brands and semi-skimmed cow’s milk.
MYOM and fat
MYOM is low-fat, containing 1.4g fat per 100ml when made-up, and 0.2g of that is saturated fats. This fat comes from the oats and rapeseed oil in MYOM, and the levels would be classified ‘green’ in the traffic light labelling system.
MYOM and protein
MYOM contains 0.4g protein per 100ml (once freshly made-up) which is like other available plant-based milks and nut milks. The recommended nutrient intake (RNI) for protein is 0.75g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day for average weight adults. For health it is important to eat a range of protein-containing foods, including plant-based sources such as beans, pulses, and lentils. Remember that our protein needs can differ across the life course, and dependant on lifestyle. For example, people who intensely exercise protein requirements can increase.
MYOM and gluten free
We cannot guarantee or certify MYOM as gluten-free at the moment. Although there are no gluten-containing ingredients used (as oats are not a gluten-containing grain), due to the way oats are processed there is risk of cross-contamination with gluten.
MYOM and iodine
Iodine is often a less talked about mineral than calcium, but it is crucial for cognitive development (brain health) and thyroid function. Given the thyroid influences the function of many bodily processes, it’s so important not to forget this mineral. Yet a lot of plant milk alternatives seem to, many not fortifying with iodine. In the UK one of the most common sources of iodine in the diet is from cow’s milk. Research has found that those that solely use alternative milks had significantly lower iodine intakes and were more commonly found to be deficient. Therefore, we feel it’s important to include this mineral in our plant milk. MYOM is a source of iodine (providing 20% of your recommended intake per 100ml). We fortify it with 30μg/100ml which is in line with the amount found in 100ml of semi-skimmed cow’s milk.
MYOM and nut free
No nuts (peanuts or tree nuts*) are used as an ingredient in MYOM, or within our factory. We also make sure we have strict protocols in place with our factory and ingredient suppliers to control for this. *In the US, the FDA class coconut as a tree nut. It is not classified as this in the UK so please note our factory does handle coconut.
MYOM and vitamin D
Although vitamin D isn’t found in cow’s milk, we chose to supercharge MYOM to be a source of vitamin D providing 15% of your recommended daily intake in 100ml (0.75μg). It not only supports your body to utilise the calcium found in MYOM, but it also supports your levels, as many of the population are thought to be deficient. We chose to use vegan-friendly D3. Our Vitamin D3 is plant-sourced from algal and may be more effective at increasing levels of vitamin D in the blood than the more commonly used D2.
MYOM and vitamin B12
You will find 0.9mcg of vitamin B12 in 100ml of made-up MYOM, this is the same amount as semi-skimmed dairy milk and is 36% of the recommended intake; making MYOM a great source of B12. It is important to ensure your plant milks are fortified with B12 when following a vegan diet, as research has found deficiency to be more of a concern. B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, functioning of the nervous system, immune system, red blood cell formation, cell division and helps with the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. So, you can see why we’ve chosen to ensure we include it within MYOM.
MYOM and wheat free
We don’t make MYOM with any wheat-based ingredients. However, due to the way that oats are handled and processed there is a risk of cross-contamination. Therefore, sadly we can’t say that MYOM is wheat-free.
MYOM and IBS
MYOM could be a great alternative for people who find dairy can trigger their IBS symptoms, however triggers are always unique. Some people experiencing IBS may follow a low FODMAP diet for a short period. The low FODMAP diet was first developed by Monash University who are still pioneers in this research. The FODMAP content of oat milks can differ, we haven’t yet tested ours yet, but in general, it is thought that in small quantities (30ml serves), oat milk is low FODMAP, but should be avoided in higher quantities. Remember you should only follow a restricted diet under the care of a nutrition professional, so it is best to check with your practitioner.
MYOM and chronic kidney disease
If you have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, it may be necessary to make changes to the food you eat. We do not add any phosphate additives into MYOM, but we do use potassium iodide. As the dietary needs can differ between individuals, it is best to talk to your kidney dietitian or doctor to discuss the best plant-based milk alternative for you.
