Why MYOM Uses Rapeseed Oil
We include rapeseed oil because it helps deliver the luxurious creaminess and superb froth MYOM is known for—without the downsides of many other seed oils. Rapeseed oil is low in saturated fat, rich in heart‑healthy unsaturated fats including omega‑3s, and has one of the best omega‑6:omega‑3 ratios at 2:1.
When you taste MYOM, you’ll notice the richness and smooth texture of our blend—thanks largely to rapeseed oil. It’s a conscious choice: flavour plus function, without compromise.
Are seed oils bad? Why MYOM Chooses Rapeseed Oil
Not all seed oils are equal. Rapeseed oil (the one we've carefully selected for MYOM) is among the healthiest. It’s low in saturated fat, has a favourable omega‑3 profile, and is supported by recent studies as one of the seed oils most associated with positive health contributions. Using rapeseed oil means we can deliver THAT creamy texture and froth that many people love, while keeping nutrition and health in mind. Read more here.
Is Oat Milk Fattening? MYOM Nutrition Compared
Short answer: No, when chosen wisely. MYOM Original Oat is among the lighter oat drinks on the market. It is lower in calories, sugar, and saturated fat than many carton oat milks or dairy milk. Read more here.
Comparison
Per 100ml
MYOM Original Oat
~34 kcal, low sugar, fortified with calcium & vitamins
Common carton oat milks
~45-60 kcal, often higher sugar/fat
Are Oats Unhealthy? The Truth Behind MYOM Oat Milk
Oats themselves are not unhealthy — in fact, they are one of the better whole grains you can include in your diet. They provide soluble fibre (beta‑glucan), support heart health, help with digestion, and bring natural sweetness without added sugars. MYOM uses high‑quality oats, minimal additives, and health‑forward ingredients. Read more here.
Is Oat Milk Bad For You?
No, oat milk can be a healthy choice, especially when it’s fortified, low in added sugars, and made fresh. MYOM is fortified with calcium, B12, D3, and iodine; low in sugar and fat; and avoids unnecessary stabilisers or additives. Read more here.
MYOM vs Carton Oat Milk
Most oat milks come pre-made in cartons. MYOM does things differently — and the difference is worth talking about.
Freshness
• Cartons: Oat drinks are made months before you open them, pasteurised, and then sit on supermarket shelves.
• MYOM: You make it fresh at home in seconds. The flavour is creamier, lighter, and award-winning — no “sat-around” taste.
Convenience
• Cartons: Bulky to carry, heavy to store, and take up fridge space.
• MYOM: Slimline pouches slip through your letterbox. Store dozens in a single cupboard, then make up only what you need. No more emergency runs to the shop when you run out of milk.
Value for Money
• Cartons: You’re mostly paying to ship water and heavy packaging. That cost is baked into the retail price.
• MYOM: We pass on the savings. Smaller, lighter packaging and less transport means more value in every pouch. One 130g pouch makes a full litre of oat milk at a competitive price.
Sustainability
• Cartons: Heavy, multi-layer packaging with low recycling rates (less than a third of UK cartons are recycled). Plus, refrigerated transport adds emissions.
• MYOM: 80% lighter packaging, fully recyclable pouches, and no refrigeration until made. Lower carbon footprint at every stage.
Storage & Shelf Life
• Cartons: Need fridge space once opened, often wasted if not finished in time.
• MYOM: Up to 12 months long shelf life at room temperature, once made, lasts 5 days in the fridge. You only make what you need, when you need it.
Taste & Performance
• Cartons: Standardised recipes often rely on stabilisers and additives (like dipotassium phosphate) for consistency.
• MYOM: A cleaner recipe, with no unnecessary additives. Freshly made milk tastes smoother, creamier, and froths beautifully. And definitely NO dipotassium phosphate.
Important Extras
• Adjust the strength: add a little less water for creamier milk, a little more for lighter. Cartons can’t do that.• Travel-Friendly: A few pouches in your bag or suitcase gives you fresh oat milk anywhere, from hotel rooms to camping trips.• Clutter-Free Recycling: One rinse and your pouch is ready to recycle from home. No crushing down bulky cartons.
MYOM vs Carton Oat Drinks: A Comparison
- Freshness: MYOM oat drinks are made fresh whenever you want them, ensuring a smooth and creamy taste. Carton oat drinks are pre-made months in advance, and their taste can degrade over time.
- Convenience: MYOM uses slimline pouches that fit through the letterbox and are easy to store. Carton drinks come in bulky cartons that take up fridge space.
- Value for Money: With MYOM, savings are passed on since one pouch makes one litre at a lower cost. Carton oat drinks are more expensive as the price includes shipping water and heavy packaging.
- Sustainability: MYOM packaging is 80% lighter, recyclable, and produces low emissions. Carton oat drinks use multi-layer cartons with low recycling rates and higher emissions.
- Shelf Life: MYOM pouches last up to 12 months when ambient and 5 days once made. Carton oat drinks have a variable shelf life and are often wasted if not consumed quickly.
- Taste & Performance: MYOM offers a clean recipe with no additives, and it froths beautifully. Carton oat drinks often contain stabilisers and additives.
- Flexibility: With MYOM, you can make the drink stronger or lighter to suit your taste. Carton oat drinks only come in one standard formula.
- Travel: MYOM is portable and easy to take anywhere. Carton oat drinks are bulky, heavy, and not travel-friendly.
MYOM vs Oat Milk Powders
Oat powders might look convenient at first glance, but the reality is very different. Here’s why MYOM stands apart as the smarter, fresher, and tastier choice.
Taste & Texture
• Powders: Often feel chalky with a thin mouthfeel. Few, if any, win taste awards.
• MYOM: A liquid premix that blends instantly into smooth, creamy oat milk. MYOM has won 2-stars Great Taste Award and Best Vegan Milk 2025 — proof that taste really matters.
Freshness
• Powders: Dehydrated from oat milk using high-heat to remove moisture and stored in bulk bags, losing some of the fresh, natural oat flavour.
• MYOM: Made fresh when you want it. Simply squeeze, add water, shake — and enjoy the taste of freshly blended oat milk.
Convenience & Portability
• Powders: Big, heavy bags (designed to make 4–8 litres at once) aren’t portable, practical, or flexible.
• MYOM: A 65g pouch makes 500ml and a 130g pouch makes 1 litre. Perfect for home, work, or travel. Small, lightweight, and letterbox-friendly.
Ease of Use
• Powders: Require careful measuring, mixing, and often warm water or blenders to dissolve properly. Even then, they can separate or clump.
• MYOM: No measuring, no hassle. Just squeeze the pouch into cold water, shake for 20 seconds, and you’re done. Always consistent, always smooth.
Clean Ingredients
• Powders: Often contain added starches, gums, or preservatives to improve solubility and shelf life.
• MYOM: A clean recipe with no artificial additives, no dipotassium phosphate, and no chalky aftertaste.
Space Saving
• Powders: Bulk bags are awkward to store, reseal, and keep fresh.
• MYOM: Slim pouches store neatly, stack easily, and slip into a cupboard or even a drawer.
Value for Money
• Powders: Price per litre may be similar to MYOM, but when you factor in the taste compromise, the loss of freshness, and the inconvenience, they’re less appealing.
• MYOM: Premium taste and convenience at the same price point — plus sustainability benefits with the comfort of a very lower carbon footprint.
Further thoughts
• Convenience: With MYOM, you can make 500ml at a time — reducing waste and suiting smaller households.
• Travel-Friendly: Slip a pouch or two into your bag, and you’ve got fresh oat milk anywhere, from hotels to camping trips.
• Award-Winning Quality: Consumers and judges agree: MYOM tastes better.
MYOM vs Oat Powders: A Comparison
- Taste & Texture: MYOM oat drinks have an award-winning flavour that’s smooth and creamy with no chalkiness. Oat powders often leave a chalky residue, have a thin mouthfeel, and are rarely award-winning.
- Freshness: MYOM is made fresh whenever you need it. Oat powders are dehydrated and stored in bulk.
- Portability: A 65g MYOM pouch makes 500ml and is travel-friendly. Oat powders typically come in heavy 4–8 litre bags that are not portable.
- Ease of Use: With MYOM, there’s no measuring required—just squeeze and shake. Oat powders require measuring and often need warm water or a blender.
- Ingredients: MYOM uses a clean recipe with no artificial additives. Oat powders often include starches, gums, and preservatives.
- Storage: MYOM comes in compact pouches that are easy to store. Oat powders are sold in bulky bags that can have resealing issues.
- Value: MYOM is competitively priced per litre while delivering premium taste and convenience. Oat powders may be a similar price but usually come with a compromise in taste.
How Are Oat Milk Powders Made?
To make oat powder, manufacturers start with oats (or oat milk), strip away the water, and then force the mixture through a high-heat drying process. This is usually done using spray-drying or drum-drying, where liquid oat base is blasted with hot air until the moisture is gone.
The result?
- A dehydrated, brittle powder that’s removed from the creamy, natural state of oats.
- The process can cause loss of aroma and delicate flavour, leaving a “flat” taste.
- Natural nutrients may be reduced or destabilised, meaning vitamins often need to be artificially added back later.
- Powders usually need anti-caking agents or starches so they don’t clump together in the bag.
When you finally mix the powder back with water, you don’t get the same fresh, creamy mouthfeel as MYOM. Instead, you’re left with a drink that can taste chalky, grainy, or thin. We think powders are a poor imitation of what oat milk should be.
Is MYOM Gluten-Free?
Oats are naturally gluten-free. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. However, oats are often grown, transported, or processed near these grains, which means they can easily become cross-contaminated. Possible cross-contamination during processing means MYOM cannot currently be certified gluten-free. While suitable for many, those with coeliac disease or diagnosed gluten allergies should avoid non-certified gluten-free food products.
Do you use Dipotassium Phosphate in MYOM?
We’ve chosen never to use dipotassium phosphate — a common additive in carton oat milks to stabilise texture. MYOM delivers creaminess and froth naturally, thanks to oats, rapeseed oil, and (for Barista) fava bean protein.
MYOM Oat Milk vs Dairy Milk
There are several differences between oat milk and dairy milk in terms of nutrition, tolerance, and environmental impact. Here are the key ones:
- Lactose-free: MYOM is naturally lactose free, making it a great option for those who suffer with lactose intolerance. Dairy milk contains lactose, which can cause digestive discomfort for some people.
- Nutrition: MYOM provides many of the same nutrients as dairy milk. In fact, per 100ml, MYOM contains slightly more calcium than semi-skimmed cow’s milk — plus added Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, and iodine, which dairy milk doesn’t always provide.
- Calories & fat:
- MYOM: 34 kcal / 1.4g fat / 0.2g saturates
- Semi-skimmed cow’s milk: 46 kcal / 2g fat / 1g saturates
- That means MYOM is lighter on calories, fat, and saturated fat.
- Carbohydrates:
- MYOM: 4.7g carbs (1.9g sugar)
- Semi-skimmed cow’s milk: 5g carbs (naturally occurring lactose)
- Sustainability: Oat milk is considered a more sustainable choice than dairy milk. MYOM uses less land, water, and energy to produce, and its recyclable pouches cut down on packaging waste. Dairy milk, by contrast, has a far higher footprint due to methane emissions from cows and the impact of large-scale animal farming.

What are the benefits of a balanced plant-based diet?
Plant-based diets are increasingly popular — whether vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian. Research shows protective effects against heart disease, some cancers, and lower chronic disease mortality. Eating a variety of plants (30+ weekly) supports a diverse gut microbiome and overall wellbeing.
Can children drink MYOM oat drink?
Children over 1 year can drink calcium-fortified oat milks like MYOM as part of a balanced diet. MYOM Original Oat contains calcium, iodine, vitamin B12 and D3 — all important for growth. Always check with a healthcare professional if your child has allergies or higher needs. Read more here.
MYOM Oat Milk Calcium Content
MYOM is fortified with calcium carbonate, which research shows is absorbed similarly to dairy calcium. Vitamin D3 (vegan) also helps support normal calcium absorption and bone health.
Calcium Content per 100ml
- MYOM Original Oat: 130 mg (16% RI)
- Semi-skimmed Dairy Milk: 120 mg (15% RI)
MYOM Oat Milk Sugar Content
MYOM is completely free of any added sugar. Any sugar you see on our nutritional information comes only from the oats themselves. With 1.9g per 100ml, MYOM is lower in sugar than many leading oat brands and semi-skimmed cow’s milk.
MYOM Oat Milk Fat Content
MYOM is naturally low in fat, with only 1.4g per 100ml and just 0.2g saturates. These levels are classified green on the UK traffic light labelling system. The fat comes from the oats and rapeseed oil used in the recipe, delivering creaminess while remaining heart-friendly.
MYOM Oat Milk Protein Content
MYOM Original Oat contains 0.4g protein per 100ml. MYOM Oat Barista, designed for coffee and frothing, provides 1.2g protein per 100ml thanks to fava bean protein. The UK RNI for protein is 0.75g/kg bodyweight per day. Needs vary across the life course, and athletes may require more.
MYOM Oat Milk Iodine Content
MYOM is fortified with iodine (30µg per 100ml, 20% RI), in line with levels found in dairy milk. Iodine is crucial for thyroid health and cognitive development. Many plant milks lack iodine fortification, but MYOM ensures you get this essential nutrient.
Is MYOM Nut-Free?
MYOM does not use peanuts or tree nuts in its recipe or factory. Strict protocols ensure supplier compliance. Note: the facility does handle coconut, which is not considered a tree nut in the UK, but is in the US.
MYOM Oat Milk Vitamin D Content
MYOM contains 0.75µg vitamin D3 per 100ml (15% RI). Unlike dairy, which does not naturally contain vitamin D, MYOM is fortified to help address UK deficiency risks. Vegan-sourced D3 may be more effective than D2 at raising vitamin D levels.
MYOM Oat Milk Vitamin B12 Content
MYOM provides 0.9µg vitamin B12 per 100ml (36% RI), the same as semi-skimmed dairy milk. B12 supports energy metabolism, nervous system health, red blood cell formation, and reduces tiredness. Fortification is essential for vegan diets.
Is MYOM Wheat-Free?
MYOM does not contain any wheat-based ingredients. However, due to the way oats are handled and processed, we cannot guarantee that MYOM is completely wheat-free.
MYOM Oat Milk and IBS
MYOM could be suitable for some with IBS who find dairy triggers symptoms. Oat milk is generally considered low FODMAP in small servings (around 30ml), but larger quantities should be avoided. As IBS triggers vary, consult a dietitian before making dietary changes.
MYOM Oat Milk and Kidney Health
If you have chronic kidney disease (CKD), dietary requirements are highly individual. MYOM contains no dipotassium phosphate, but it does include potassium iodide. Always seek advice from a kidney dietitian or doctor before choosing plant-based milk alternatives.
Preparation & storage
How Do I Make MYOM Oat Milk?
There are two easy ways: by shaking in a bottle or blending. Once made, refrigerate immediately and consume within 5 days. Shake before each use to avoid natural separation. For a creamier result try adding less water. Read more here.
How to Make MYOM Oat Drink
Using a 65g pouch
- Shake Method: Add 240ml water to a clean 500ml bottle, squeeze in the MYOM Oat Blend, shake for 30 seconds, then top up with 200ml water and shake again. Best for everyday use.
- Blender Method: Add 440ml water plus the MYOM Oat Blend, blend for 30 seconds, then pour into a clean bottle. This gives extra creamy results with frothy foam.
Using a 130g pouch
- Shake Method: Add 500ml water to a clean 1-litre bottle, squeeze in the MYOM Oat Blend, shake for 30 seconds, then top up with 375ml water and shake again. Best for everyday use.
- Blender Method: Add 875ml water plus the MYOM Oat Blend, blend for 30 seconds, then pour into a clean 1-litre bottle. This gives extra creamy results.
Adjusting Water & Creaminess
MYOM is flexible. If it’s too thin, add more blend. If it’s too thick, add water. You can also customise creaminess by reducing water. A 65g pouch is designed to make 500ml of oat milk, a 130g pouch is designed to make 1 litre, but ratios can be adjusted to taste.
Does Shaking Mix MYOM Properly?
Yes. MYOM has been formulated to dissolve well by shaking. Separation over time is natural in plant milks. Just shake again before use and it’s as fresh as day one.
Can I Use a Blender or Frother with MYOM?
Blender: Produces a frothy foam, ideal for lattes or smoothies.
Frother: Works brilliantly for café-style drinks. Simply prepare MYOM, then froth as usual.
MYOM Oat Barista (launching Nov 2025) is optimised for all types of frothing: from home frothers to professional espresso machines.
What happens if I add the wrong amount of water?
You can add more MYOM if you’ve added too much water, or more water if you haven’t added enough. If you want a creamier taste, just add less water.
As a rule - one MYOM pouch plus 440ml of water makes 500ml of a perfect semi skimmed style oat milk.
Can I cook with MYOM Oat Milk?
Absolutely — and you’ll love how versatile MYOM is in the kitchen. It isn’t just for drinks. From breakfast through dinner, MYOM Original Oat can replace cow’s milk or store-bought oat milk in almost any recipe, offering:
• A richer flavour that enhances both sweet and savoury dishes
• A creamier texture without unnecessary additives
• A fresher taste, since you make it on demand
Whether you’re stirring it into porridge, whisking it into pancake batter, blending a smoothie, or making a velvety pasta sauce, MYOM works wherever you’d normally use milk.

Why Cooking with MYOM Makes Sense
- Creamier Texture: Thanks to rapeseed oil and optimized ratio, MYOM gives sauces and desserts a smoother mouthfeel than many carton or powdered oat milks.
- Consistent Performance at Heat: MYOM handles heat well without separating — ideal for sauces, baked dishes, or simmered meals.
- Nutritious Swap: You still get added calcium, B12, D3, and iodine — so your meals stay fortified when using MYOM instead of dairy.
- Better Flavour: Fresh‑mixed MYOM retains oat flavour, unlike some store liquids that can taste a bit processed after cooking.
- Flexible Portioning: Make just what you need — reduces waste. If a recipe calls for 250ml of milk, use a quarter pouch or a portion of your pouch, made fresh.
Why Does MYOM Oat Milk Separate?
Natural separation is common in all plant milks. Unlike cartons, MYOM isn’t heavily processed with stabilisers. A gentle shake before each use restores creaminess.
How to Store MYOM Oat Milk?
MYOM is made with a BBE date (Best Before End) of up to 12 months.
In practice for MYOM:
• Unopened pouch → Best Before End (BBE) date, typically up to 12-month shelf life.
• Made-up MYOM milk → refrigerate and used within 5 days (Use By).
Before opening: Keep unopened pouches at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
After making up: Refrigerate immediately and consume within 5 days. Shake before use.
After opening a pouch: If not used at once, refrigerate and use within 5 days.
Does MYOM Oat Milk Need Refrigeration?
Unopened pouch: no refrigeration needed. Once made into oat milk: refrigerate and use within 5 days.
Can I Freeze MYOM Oat Milk?
You can freeze MYOM pouches, but we don’t recommend freezing pouches — MYOM has a long shelf life without the need for freezing.
What is the shelf life of MYOM oat milk?
MYOM Original Oat has a 12-month shelf life. MYOM Oat Barista has a 7-month shelf-life. We will steadily increase MYOM Oat Barista to 12-month shelf-life, so best to check the back of the pack. Once made into milk, both can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days. Best-before dates are printed on packaging. Store pouches in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
Why Does MYOM Oat Milk Last So Long?
Our recyclable pouches are high-barrier, protecting MYOM from light, oxygen, and moisture without aluminium. This allows us to manufacture MYOM with a 12 months’ shelf life until opened. MYOM Oat Barista has a 7-month shelf-life. We plan to steadily increase this to 12-month shelf-life.
Difference Between Best Before and Use By Dates
In the UK, food labels carry either a Best Before date (quality) or a Use By date (safety). Knowing the difference helps you enjoy food at its best while staying safe.
In practice for MYOM:
• Unopened pouch → shows a Best Before End (BBE) date (typically up to 12-month shelf life).
• Made-up MYOM milk → refrigerate and used within 5 days (Use By).
Understanding MYOM Date Labels
- MYOM uses Best Before (BBE):
This is a guide to quality. The product may lose some taste, texture, or nutrition after this date but is usually still safe if stored correctly.
Safe after date? Yes, if it looks, smells, and tastes fine.
Relevance: Applies to unopened MYOM pouches. - MYOM advises a Use By Date of 5 days for made-up drink:
This is a guide to safety. After this time, the drink may contain harmful bacteria, even if it still looks fine.
Safe after date? No, you should not consume it after the specified time.
Relevance: Applies to made-up MYOM oat milk.
Can I Add MYOM Directly to Tea or Coffee?
Yes. You can squeeze a little directly into hot drinks for a creamier taste. Refrigerate opened pouches and use within 5 days. Red more here.
Will MYOM Oat Milk Have Other Variants and Pack Sizes?

How is MYOM Oat Milk Packaged?
Packaging Overview
At MYOM, we believe packaging should protect the product, keep it fresh, and minimise environmental impact. That’s why we’ve developed a packaging system that is lightweight, recyclable, and reusable. We believe MYOM offers a better alternative to cartons and powders.

• Glass bottles are dishwasher-safe and endlessly recyclable.
• Pouches are EU and FDA approved for food contact.
• Every element is designed to reduce waste from production to recycling.
Are MYOM Oat Milk Pouches BPA-Free?
Yes. All MYOM pouches are BPA-free and safe for food use.
What Other Food Packaging Uses Polypropylene (PP5)?
MYOM pouches are made from polypropylene (PP5) — a food-safe plastic that is lightweight, durable and widely recycled across the UK. PP5 is already familiar in everyday packaging, which makes it easy for consumers to understand and recycle responsibly.
By choosing PP5, MYOM ensures our packaging is lightweight, widely recyclable, and compatible with existing UK kerbside systems — unlike multi-layer cartons, which are harder to recycle.
Everyday Food Packaging & Recycling
- Butter & Spread Tubs
Pack format: Rigid tubs with snap-on lids.
Recycling: Widely kerbside recyclable once rinsed. - Yoghurt Pots & Ice-Cream Tubs
Pack format: Available in single-serve and family-size pots.
Recycling: Recyclable in many UK councils (must be clean; lid may need removing if required). - Sauce Bottles
Pack format: Squeezable or rigid bottles.
Recycling: Often made from PP5, widely kerbside recyclable once rinsed.
Consumer Reassurance
• All MYOM pouches are BPA-free, EU & FDA approved for food contact.
• Simply rinse, replace the cap, and recycle at home.
• Using PP5 means consumers already have a clear recycling route, just like with yoghurt pots or butter tubs.
Where is MYOM Oat Milk Made?
MYOM is made in a nut-free facility in North Lanarkshire in Scotland, UK.
Sustainability
Is MYOM Oat Milk Really More Sustainable?
Yes! MYOM is significantly more sustainable than dairy and even more so than ready-to-drink plant milks. MYOM Original Oat Milk premix – a world first and the sustainable alternative to cartons. MYOM impact is 20% that of dairy and half that of oat milk in cartons.
- Dairy milk has the highest climate impact due to methane emissions from cows, a potent greenhouse gas.
- Carton plant milks avoid methane but still involve shipping and refrigerating a product that is 90% water. This means their CO₂ emissions are surprisingly similar to dairy once processing, transport, and refrigeration are included.
- MYOM reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to dairy milk and half that of oat milk in cartons. By removing water at the factory and letting you add it at home, we slash weight, cut refrigeration needs, and shrink packaging.
- Packaging efficiency: A MYOM pouch is tiny compared to a carton, lighter to transport, and easier to recycle.
- Shelf life advantage: A 12-month unopened shelf life means less food waste, you only make want when you need it.
In terms of everyday choices, switching to MYOM is one of the most impactful ways you can reduce your carbon footprint.
Can MYOM Packaging Be Recycled?
Yes, all MYOM packaging has been designed with recycling in mind:
- Pouches & Caps: Made from polypropylene (PP5), the same material used in yoghurt pots and food tubs. Widely accepted in UK kerbside collections. Simply rinse, reattach the cap, and recycle at home.
- Boxes: Made from PEFC-certified folding box board sourced from 100% primary fibre in sustainable forests. Our board is organic, renewable, recyclable, and has the lowest carbon footprint of any packaging material.
- Recycling performance: Box board is the most recycled material in the EU, with an 81% recycling rate. It can be recycled more than 25 times with little loss of integrity, feeding into recycled carton board and paper products.
By choosing PP5 and FSC-certified materials, MYOM ensures packaging is both fit for purpose and fully recyclable, unlike multi-layer cartons.
Are MYOM Pouches Really Recyclable Everywhere?
Cartons have an effective UK recycling rate of less than 30% and are rarely accepted for kerbside recycling. Most are incinerated or landfilled due to their mixed materials (paper, plastic, aluminium). In contrast, polypropylene pouches (PP5) are widely recycled in UK kerbside collections.
Why cartons are hard to recycle
- Multi-layer construction: A standard 1L Tetra Pak has ~75% paperboard, ~20% polyethylene (plastic) and ~5% aluminium.
- This “sandwich” of materials makes it difficult to separate and recycle efficiently.
- In the UK, only a small number of specialist facilities can process them.
- Although many councils collect cartons, the effective recycling rate is under 30% because much of the material is downcycled, sent abroad, or incinerated.
What “widely recycled” means for MYOM pouches (PP5)
- MYOM pouches are polypropylene (plastic type 5), a single, mono-material that’s already used in everyday packaging like yoghurt pots and butter tubs.
- “Widely recycled” is a UK On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) definition: it means 75% or more of local authorities accept the material in their household kerbside recycling collections.
- In practice, most households across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can put PP5 into their standard household recycling bin (once rinsed, cap attached).
What if a council doesn’t accept PP5 at kerbside?
- Check local authority guidance: some smaller councils may not yet collect PP plastics.
- Supermarket collection points: most large supermarkets now offer front-of-store recycling bins for flexible plastics and PP pots, tubs and trays.
- Terracycle and specialist schemes: consumers can use drop-off points or postal schemes where PP5 is not kerbside accepted.
Summary for recycling MYOM pouches
- Most UK households: rinse, cap on, and put MYOM pouches in your household recycling bin.
- If kerbside not available: drop them at supermarket recycling points or specialist schemes.
- Either way, MYOM’s mono-material design means it is far more recyclable than cartons, which are rarely recycled into new cartons.
What is the CO₂ footprint of MYOM vs cartons and bottles?
A 1L MYOM equivalent weighs just 130g including packaging, compared to ~1.1kg for a filled plant milk carton. Our life-cycle analysis shows that each pouch saves up to 0.3kg CO₂e compared to a carton of oat milk, mainly by cutting transport emissions (fewer trucks, less refrigeration). Shipping one pallet of MYOM equals the volume of ~7 pallets of liquid oat milk cartons.
Why Does Removing Water Matter?
Ready-to-drink oat milks are 90% water; MYOM is a liquid oat base with the similar nutritional profile. Instead of shipping heavy liquid around the country, we let you add water at home in seconds. Less weight = fewer trucks on the road, lower fuel use, and less packaging per litre.
What About Food Waste?
Fresh oat milk or opened cartons can spoils within days of opening.
MYOM is ambient-stable for 12 months until mixed. By only making what you need, you can avoid pouring away spoiled oat milk. On average 1 in every 6 litres if poured away by UK households.
How Much Plastic Does MYOM Use Compared to Cartons?
A standard 1L carton weighs ~35g (with ~9.6g plastic + 2g aluminium).
A MYOM pouch weighs just 6g, all recyclable PP.
That’s 80% less plastic per litre, and no aluminium.
